    Philcematomyia insignis is a small greyish-brown fly, found throughout the Oriental region, and recorded also from Tropical Africa. The genus is closely allied to Musca, and in general appearance, breeding habits, venation, etc., there is little to distinguish it. The characteristic feature, on account of which the genus was founded, is the presence of a ring of stout chitinous teeth at the tip of the proboscis. It is, in fact, in spite of its innocent appearance, a voracious bloodsucker. It preys exclusively, so far as is known, on cattle, and in the neighbourhood of this Institute it is much the commonest blood-sucking fly found on them. It is especially fond of feeding on the abdomen of calves which have been shaved for vaccination. Both male and female suck blood, and possibly also feed on the dung in which their eggs are laid.The proboscis is completely retractile, like that of Musca, and it is only exceptionally the case that the teeth can be seen in dried specimens ; even if the proboscis happens to be extended the teeth are not visible unless the labellar walls are retracted so as to disclose them. It is therefore probable that it will be found to be much commoner and more widely distributed than the present records state, when it is more systematically looked for

    In August of 1971, the Solicitor General of Canada appointed a committee of psychiatrists to advise him on the treatment of mentally ill inmates. The committee completed its work and reported in May 1972. The report, entitled The General Program for the Development of Psychiatric Services in Federal Correctional Services in Canada1 developed in the space of sixty pages, including appendices, a general program for expanding psychiatric services and facilities in the field of corrections in Canada. In his forward to the Report, the Solicitor General, Warren Allmand, announces that he is profoundly impressed by the recommendations made by this authoritative body . Further, he has directed that the psychiatric services of the federal Correctional Services be developed as the Psychiatric Services Report suggests. At the same time he indicates that comments on the program would be welcome

    Proposals on Kaplan–Meier plots in medical research and a survey of stakeholder views: KMunicate

    OBJECTIVES: To examine reactions to the proposed improvements to standard Kaplan–Meier plots, the standard way to present time-to-event data, and to understand which (if any) facilitated better depiction of (1) the state of patients over time, and (2) uncertainty over time in the estimates of survival. DESIGN: A survey of stakeholders’ opinions on the proposals. SETTING: A web-based survey, open to international participation, for those with an interest in visualisation of time-to-event data. PARTICIPANTS: 1174 people participated in the survey over a 6-week period. Participation was global (although primarily Europe and North America) and represented a wide range of researchers (primarily statisticians and clinicians). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Two outcome measures were of principal importance: (1) participants’ opinions of each proposal compared with a ‘standard’ Kaplan–Meier plot; and (2) participants’ overall ranking of the proposals (including the standard). RESULTS: Most proposals were more popular than the standard Kaplan–Meier plot. The most popular proposals in the two categories, respectively, were an extended table beneath the plot depicting the numbers at risk, censored and having experienced an event at periodic timepoints, and CIs around each Kaplan–Meier curve. CONCLUSION: This study produced a high response number, reflecting the importance of graphics for time-to-event data. Those producing and publishing Kaplan–Meier plots—both authors and journals—should, as a starting point, consider using the combination of the two favoured proposals

    A Search for 6.7 GHz Methanol Masers in M33

    We report the negative results from a search for 6.7 GHz methanol masers in the nearby spiral galaxy M33. We observed 14 GMCs in the central 4 kpc of the Galaxy, and found 3 sigma upper limits to the flux density of ~9 mJy in spectral channels having a velocity width of 0.069 km/s. By velocity shifting and combining the spectra from the positions observed, we obtain an effective 3sigma upper limit on the average emission of ~1mJy in a 0.25 km/s channel. These limits lie significantly below what we would expect based on our estimates of the methanol maser luminosity function in the Milky Way. The most likely explanation for the absence of detectable methanol masers appears to be the metallicity of M33, which is modestly less than that of the Milky Way

    Two-channel Kondo model as a generalized one-dimensional inverse square long-range Haldane-Shastry spin model

    Majorana fermion representations of the algebra associated with spin, charge, and flavor currents have been used to transform the two-channel Kondo Hamiltonian. Using a path integral formulation, we derive a reduced effective action with long-range impurity spin-spin interactions at different imaginary times. In the semiclassical limit, it is equivalent to a one-dimensional Heisenberg spin chain with two-spin, three-spin, etc. long-range interactions, as a generalization of the inverse-square long-range Haldane-Shastry spin model. In this representation the elementary excitations are "semions", and the non-Fermi-liquid low-energy properties of the two-channel Kondo model are recovered.Comment: 4 pages, no figure, to be published in J.     Low energy properties of M-state tunneling systems in metals: New candidates for non-Fermi-liquid systems

    We construct a generalized multiplicative renormalization group transformation to study the low energy dynamics of a heavy particle tunneling among MM different positions and interacting with NfN_f independent conduction electron channels. Using a 1/Nf1/N_f-expansion we show that this M-level scales towards a fixed point equivalent to the NfN_f channel SU(M)×SU(Nf)SU(M) \times SU(N_f) Coqblin-Schrieffer model. Solving numerically the scaling equations we find that a realistic M-level system scales close to this fixed point (FP) and its Kondo temperature is in the experimentally observable range 110K1-10 K.Comment: 11 Latex pages, to appear in Phys.     A detailed and comprehensive study of the one-impurity multichannel Kondo model is presented. In the limit of a large number of conduction electron channels k1k \gg 1, the low energy fixed point is accessible to a renormalization group improved perturbative expansion in 1/k1/k. This straightforward approach enables us to examine the scaling, thermodynamics and dynamical response functions in great detail and make clear the following features: i) the criticality of the fixed point; ii) the universal non-integer degeneracy; iii) that the compensating spin cloud has the spatial extent of the order of one lattice spacing.Comment: 28 pages, REVTEX 2.0.
